ARTIST PROFILE: AASIRI WICKREMAGE
The popular Guildford Arts Annual Summer Art Exhibition returns to the historic riverside Mill Studio, next to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in the heart of the town this July. Throughout the week we will be chatting to featured artists whose work will be appearing at the exhibition – up next is Aasiri Wickremage…
Can you describe your creative process?
I start working with an idea of the subject matter and the outline of the narrative, but the take on assessment of colour, form, markings and composition is very intuitive. I find the the initial intuitive laying of colour and lines are integral in defining the underlying coherence and mood of places I paint.
Where have you found inspiration in the last year?
I am an avid traveler and coming from Asia there was deep sense of longing to visit the tropics. I took time to appreciating and take an interest in spaces and landscapes around me and draw inspiration. Additionally I have had the chance start a new body of work dedicated to my Sri Lankan roots where I explored arts and creativity in history during times of pandemic.
Do you find your art works develop/evolve from your original intentions? I Intentionally do now draw a definite frame work as to how the end result would be. The choice of colour and marking completely evolves while revisiting my memories of my perspective of the place or space, so it always evolves very organically.
Has the pandemic changed anything about your creative process?
Its has given me a lot of time explore new topics, that i might not have given much thought before the pandemic.
What is the best thing about able to exhibit live again?
Super excited to meet other artists and interact with visitors again.
