to hear about offers, invitations, and what’s on. Whether you’re interested in comedy nights, seeing West End performers without the slog to London, children and teen workshops, open mic nights, fantastic musicals, original plays and performances, Q&As with industry experts on all aspects of stagecraft, or traditional pantos, this historic Playhouse has got you covered.
Past
The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, nestled in the heart of Walton-on-Thames, has been a centre for performing arts for almost a century. Once one of three major film studios in Britain, The Playhouse has a rich history, with tours provided for film-buffs and culture-vultures.
Marked for possible closure in 2022, our community faced the loss not of a building, but of a truly treasured asset loved by so many people. So many, in fact, that 7000 signatures protesting the closure were collected in just one week!
Present
The Playhouse now stands as a wonderful community-centred space in the local area, run by Volunteers whose focus is not making money, but on bringing together communities, providing recreation for all and developing the future of performing arts.
Home to theatrical societies with members that span all ages, as well as to performing arts schools, we also host seminars and workshops, encouraging emerging talent to develop crucial skills and gain the vital experience needed to progress a career in theatre.
Audiences enjoy fantastic performances such as the wonderful “White Christmas” shown in December of last year, the lively “Little Shop of Horrors” staged by a local youth theatre, or professional performances from comedians, singers and actors including the upcoming Comedy Night, “West End Wickedness” Halloween and a fascinating adaptation of “Prometheus in Chains”, all being staged this October. Future
It’s an exciting time to get involved as we head into our 100-year birthday in 2025! We have so much planned, with a New Year’s Eve party to kick off the celebrations, and new opportunities to bring new audiences, new performers and even more energy to The Playhouse.
Invitation to Heritage Day
14th September 2024
Free tours, film show and live performance.
For the annual Heritage Open Days 2024, the Playhouse will open from 11am, live performances, film shows – or perhaps a guided backstage tour is more your thing? The bar will be open, plus tea, coffee and cakes!
We’ll welcome you, show you around and maybe you’d be interested in becoming a volunteer yourself? (We have a great time and you can be as busy as much or little as you want).
