Surrey’s Property Pulse
On Wednesday 29 November, over 100 property professionals (the biggest turnout since pre-pandemic times) gathered at the West Surrey Golf Club for the final Property Professionals Lunch of 2023.
The lunch is a regular fixture in the property calendar and is hosted by leading law firm, Penningtons Manches Cooper.
After a delicious two-course lunch, guests were welcomed by David Graham-Smith who is a senior consultant in the commercial real estate team at Penningtons Manches Cooper.
David introduced a couple of speakers from top accountancy and tax firm, BDO – Tax Partner, Michael Flaherty and Associate Tax Director, Thomas Harrison. They focused their attention on some of the key points announced in the Autumn Statement and gave their views on how the measures will likely affect the property market now and in the future. These include positive news on changes to capital allowances which should encourage business investments and growth. A business rates support package worth £4.3 billion over the next five years will support small businesses and the high street. NIC cuts which may make individuals feel a bit more positive. Whilst no shock or substantial changes were announced, the measures should provide a little optimism and certainty for real estate investors. Michael and Thomas looked forward to the 2024 UK General Election, with the expectation of further significant tax cuts and incentives likely.
Next to the speaker’s podium was Caroline Dore, a trustee of the national charity, Home-Start UK. The charity has been running for 50 years, and the Guildford branch began 26 years ago. Home-Start relies on volunteers and charitable donations and has helped many families and children who are going through challenging times. Home-Start is hosting a charity ball on 2 February at G Live in Guildford and is looking for sponsors.
